On April 24, 2007, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously to grant landmark protection to 472 buildings, forming the cornerstone of a much larger Crown Heights North Historic District, which will one day include 1,400 buildings.
Crown Heights North Association, Inc. (CHNA) spearheaded the efforts to obtain this historic landmark status. The Annual House Tour is a continuation of our mission to protect, preserve and celebrate our neighborhood, reminding our long time residents of the beauty and grace they have lived with for years, and introducing newer residents and visitors to the neighborhood and its people. Each tour invites the public to a variety of homes, churches and organizations that are happy to open their doors and share the warmth and neighborliness of the community. Homeowners welcome tour goers, who get to see not only beautifully renovated or restored homes, but sometimes homes still undergoing restoration, a fascinating peek into the complex process of renovation and construction. Few neighborhoods can boast the quality of the churches in Crown heights North. Many denominations are represented, and the styles range from classic Romanesque to Gothic to Italian Renaissance. Crown Heights North is an architectural treasure. Tour goers also learn about the neighborhood and all the exciting community and arts organizations that are part of what makes Crown Height North such a great place to live in. |
